Nils Gustén is a Swedish basso cantante with a beautiful timbre, strong stage presence and a special talent for comic roles. He graduated from the University College of Opera in Stockholm in 2015. Since then, he has established himself as a versatile and much sought-after singer on opera stages across Scandinavia and Europe, with engagements at venues such as the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, Opéra de Rouen, and Opéra de Reims, Malmö Opera among others.
His operatic repertoire includes roles such as Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro (Läckö Castle Opera), the title role in Il turco in Italia, Colline in La bohème (Royal Danish Opera), Osmin in Die Entführung aus dem Serail (French co-production at Opéra de Reims, Clermont-Ferrand, Avignon, Rouen and Massy), Mars in Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers, Pistola in Falstaff, Zuniga in Carmen, and Benoît in La bohème. He has also appeared in contemporary and newly written works, including Nordkraft (Copenhagen Opera Festival), Snösystern, Where Is the Sandwich?, and Kronbruden (touring production), as well as Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Death Says No) at Malmö Opera.
At Malmö Opera, Nils has been a frequent collaborator with Operaverkstan, appearing in productions such as Nothing Can Stop the Premiere, The Leader, Comedy on a Bridge, The Snow Sister, and Death Says No. On Malmö Opera’s main stage, he has sung Mars in Orphée aux enfers and Pistola in Falstaff. He has also appeared at Helsingborg City Theatre in Amadeus and at Vadstena Academy in both opera and spoken theatre productions.
Alongside his stage work, Nils is an increasingly in-demand concert soloist. His sacred and symphonic repertoire includes Mozart’s and Verdi’s Requiem, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung and Nelson Mass, Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, and Mozart’s Coronation Mass. He has performed, among other engagements, at the prestigious Thirteen Day Concert at Berwaldhallen under the direction of Patrik Ringborg.
In the 2025/26 season, Nils appears as Don Magnifico in the touring production of La Cenerentola and as compère and soloist in Julgransplundring with the Royal Swedish Opera.
He is a recipient of the Confidence Scholarship from the Anders Wall Foundation and has also been awarded scholarships from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Vadstena Academy.
