NILS GUSTÉN BASS BIOGRAPHY
Nils Gustén is a young basso cantante with a beautiful timbre, strong stage presence and a special talent for comic roles. In the 2021-22 season, he is currently as Tom in Un ballo in Maschera at the Royal Theater in Denmark and in the production Amadeus at Helsingborgs Stadsteater. Next season, he will return to Malmö Opera in the role of Henrik in the newly written work Snösystern at the Opera Workshop at Malmö Opera and in the opera Where is the sandwich?, Unga på operan at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.
Recent engagements include the role of Mars in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underground, the party Hossein in the newly written opera Nordkraft during the Copenhagen Opera Festival and participation in the Opera Workshop’s cabaret Nothing Can Stop the premiere, Malmö Opera.
During the summer of 2019, Nils made his debut as Figaro in Figaro’s wedding at Läckö Castle Opera. Other interesting engagements in previous seasons include Zuniga in Carmen at the Opera Workshop, Bedron in Comedy on a Bridge by Bohuslav Martinu, Osmin in a French co-production of Enleveringen ur Seraljen at Opera de Reims, the opera in Clermont-Ferrand, Avignon, Rouen, Massy and Reims.
Mention may also be made of the role of Colline in La Bohème at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, participation in the Royal Opera’s production My brother is Don Juan on tour in Mannheim, Germany, as Death in Malmö Opera’s production of Death says no (or The Emperor of Atlantis ) composed by Viktor Ullmann, participation in Larsson Gothe’s opera about Jussi Björling, in Piteå Chamber Opera’s production Boris Christ and in the tragedy Comala and the comedy Nina at Vadstena Academy.
Nils took his Bachelor’s degree at the Opera Academy in the spring of 2015. His two degree projects included Leporello in Don Giovanni (act1), Ariodate in Xerxes (act1) and Ulf in The Bergtagna by Ivar Hallström.
Nils is an increasingly sought-after concert soloist and has, among other things, participated in Berwaldhallen’s prestigious Thirteen Day Concert under the direction of Patrik Ringborg. The sacred repertoire includes Mozart’s and Verdi’s Requiem, Hayden’s Nelson Mass, Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Mozart’s Coronation Mass to name a few.
In 2015, Nils received the honorable Confidence Scholarship from Anders Wall’s foundations and has previously received scholarships from the Royal Academy of Music and the Vadstena Academy, where he participated in the summer of 2014 in the performance Silverskeppet.
