MARTIN SEGERSTRÅLE CONDUCTOR
Martin Segerstråle (f. 1984) is a conductor, pianist, composer and arranger. He started his career as pianist and repetiteur in musical theatre and conducted several choirs in his native Turku, Finland, while finishing a bachelor’s degree in musicology and German. Martin then studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland and graduated with a Master’s degree in choral conducting and the piano in 2015. He also studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and graduated from the musical direction and coaching programme (postgraduate) with distinction in 2016.
Martin Segerstråle has worked extensively as conductor of musical theatre and opera (Natten är ännu ung, The Light in the Piazza, Sweeney Todd, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady, Solange. Solange!, Psykiatri, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mary Poppins, Grease, Tjugo sekunder, Something Rotten!, Matilda, Nattexpressen, orchestral concerts) and is also a highly regarded accompanist, having worked with some of the major Finnish opera singers.
Martin Segerstråle has worked as repetiteur and assistant chorus master at the Finnish National Opera and is frequently asked to give masterclasses on musical theatre interpretation and ensemble singing. He conducts two choirs and has taught conducting at several masterclasses.
Martin is also a published composer with several works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments in his catalogue. He has received several awards for his work in Finland, with one of the prize statements referring to his musical versatility as ”unique.”
